The Herds are in Big Trouble.

Ivory poachers and just one breeding age bull in Way Kambas National Park means the herds are in big trouble. Don’t let them disappear forever.
Help translocate two breeding bulls to the area and fund ongoing ranger patrols.

With ivory poachers never far away and just one breeding age bull remaining, the herds of Way Kambas National Park, Sumatra are in big trouble.

Their population is declining. It’s now a race against time to stop the herds of Way Kambas from disappearing altogether.

This is where you can help! We have a special opportunity to move two young bulls to Way Kambas from another area in Sumatra. But we need your help to do it! We must raise USD$20,000 to make this project a reality.

Please donate today to help fund the urgent relocation of two bull elephants to give the herds of Way Kambas a fighting chance of survival.

The two young bulls are currently in the Bukit Tigapuluh Ecosystem. They were chosen as perfect candidates for this transfer as they are in their ‘dispersal phase’. This means they have left their family groups and are in search of a new home and females to breed with. With many young bulls in this area, the removal of these two bulls will not affect the local population. In addition, these bulls will be under stress and at risk as they try to disperse into a human dominated landscape.

The journey to transport the bulls from the Bukit Tigapuluh Ecosystem in central Sumatra to Way Kambas National Park in the far south of the island is hundreds of kilometres.

An operation like this will take several days and will need a team of highly skilled people. Ensuring that the bulls travel safely is critical. Experienced staff will care for the elephants every step of the way, with vets available to support the bulls if they become distressed and anxious.

Expert wildlife staff, translocation equipment, food and water, and medical attention all cost money. That’s why we need your help to do it.

Without urgent action, this vulnerable population of 180 Critically Endangered Sumatran elephants is at risk of dying out. If we lose the herds of Way Kambas this will have a devastating impact on the long-term survival of the entire species.

Ongoing Ranger Patrols

Over the past ten years, poachers have slaughtered nearly all the breeding males in Way Kambas for their ivory. With just one bull remaining and the possibility of two new bulls arriving, ranger patrols are needed more than ever before.

With your support we can continue to fund these brave ranger teams to patrol the forest and combat illegal activities that put the bulls and herds at risk.

Our Elephant Response Unit is extremely diligent in patrolling the national park, removing snares and traps, recording evidence of illegal logging, and confronting poachers and hunters. They have been instrumental in ensuring the arrests and convictions of wildlife criminals over the past couple of years.

Thanks to your generous support, the elephants of Way Kambas will be safer than ever before, and their numbers can begin to recover.
